Bringing the world of comics and graphic novels to the Early Start Discovery Space
Prominent Illawarra businessman Graham Lancaster has shared his passion for comics and graphic novels by donating funds to be used in purchasing reading materials and delivering workshops at the Early Start Discovery Space.
Thanks to Graham’s generous donation, the Discovery Space now houses over 40 various comics and graphic novels series including Benny and Penny, Benjamin Bear and Petit Poilu Series. The materials have been curated to appeal to all ages, including younger children.
Comics and graphic novels have the ability to share life lessons in an interesting way that resonates with children. Graham said “I learned the values of honesty, perseverance, courage and self-sacrifice through reading Spider-Man, Superman and Batman comics, as well as increasing my vocabulary and visual memory skills”.
Early Start’s CEO, Michelle Kellaway said “We are grateful for Graham’s kind donation enabling us to expand our Book Nook with exciting and interesting materials that appeal to children and adults. We are well aware of the benefits of reading with children, and the impact this has on their development, communication, speech skills and imagination. Illustrated children’s books and graphic novels are a great way to do this”.
The Discovery Space will also hold various school holiday workshops funded through Graham’s donation. Comic book illustrator Marcelo Baez will run two “Comic Character and Design Workshops” in the July school holidays and Mathew Lin, an artist, illustrator and designer, will run a “Design your own Superhero Workshop” in the September school holidays.
All contributions help the Early Start Discovery Space to continue to share the power of play and instil a lifelong love of learning. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out how you can help.
